南美洲地势西高东低，大陆分为三 个南北纵列带（1 )东部是波状起伏的高原，北是圭亚那高原，中是巴西高 原，南是巴塔哥尼亚高原；（2)西部为 狭长的安第斯山脉，属美洲科迪勒拉山 系，多6000米以上的雪峰和火山，地震 频繁；（3)中央是平原，北为奥里诺科平 原，中为亚马孙平原，南是拉普拉塔平 原。分别有奥里诺科河、亚马孙河和巴 拉那河贯穿其间。岛屿面积15万平方千 米，不到全洲面积的1%。
